I Gave Up…
After Over Two Years of Fighting It… I am now working to get up around dawn. I still have not figured out the writing parts, but I need to do this for the exercise, so the writing will follow. I am starting two things next week that I just could not figure out how to do with the heat. I will be joining a running group that starts once a week at 6 am to train for a marathon, so once a week I was going to basically lose a day anyway by getting up so early. And all races start very early in the morning anyway. And I have…

Friday Night and Exercise
Talking Exercise for a Minute… Since it is Friday night and even the streets of Vegas are mostly empty, I figured it might be time for me to talk about what I promised a while back, and that is regularly blogging here about exercise and weight loss. It has been brutally hard to do either this last month. Vegas has had the hottest August on record EVER! Think that through. Las Vegas, known for heat, just broke all records. Oh, joy, which made going outside impossible unless you are out and moving at dawn, and even then some of those temperatures this month would have taken a long time to…

Went Running Again
Pride Run at the Springs Preserve here in downtown Las Vegas. Running around a desert in the middle of the city starting at 7 am. The Preserve is a fantastic place and Kris and I support it by being yearly members. But 7 am??? I went to bed at 2:30 am, got up at 6 am. Picture below of me trying to pin my bib on as the sun comes up. Yeah, that was fun. Sharp-pointy-things and no sleep go well together. My hip is feeling better, so thought I would give the 5K a try. I did fine. I actually stayed with the leaders of the 5k for about…

Running Picture and Cat Picture
After Laughing at a Beginning Writer’s Ego… In the last post, I figured I had better post two pictures. First one is of my hoping to the heavens after running over six miles that someone will meet me in about fifty steps on the other side of the finish line with a wheelchair. No one did. First 3.1 miles was all uphill. Oh, my… Second picture is of our cat Cheeps looking as handsome as ever.

Anthology Workshop News and A Cat Picture
On Teachable Now for Assignments If you are in the anthology workshop and did not get a letter from me tonight (Sunday) on how to get into the anthology workshop on Teachable to get the third assignment, write me. ANOTHER RUN… Two in two days, although the Santa Run wasn’t much of a push because with that many people, running was almost impossible. Too much fun, anyway. But today was another matter. I was up before the sun came up and we were going off the starting line in Henderson at 8 am. Cold, wind in our faces, and uphill for exactly 1.5 miles. Without a break. Brutal. But I…

Promised Pictures of Craziness
10,000 or More Santas… In one place. Running and walking 5K. At one point about four blocks into the run, I climbed up on some courthouse steps. As far as I could see in both lanes of Las Vegas Blvd, headed toward the Strip, were Santas. And as far as I could see, stretching back into downtown Las Vegas and Fremont Street, there were Santas. Kids in Santa suits, dogs in Santa suits, all sizes of humans in Santa Suits. We did this last year and that was one of the first moments I knew I was going to love this crazy city more than I already had over the…

Fun Holiday
With Running and Great Food and Friends… Started the day off getting up in the middle of my night, putting in the turkey to cook, picking up Steph and Val at 7 am and all four of us heading out to Summerlin for a Turkey Rock Fun Run. It was a cold but beautiful morning, sunny and no sign of the coming storm at all. So I kicked up to the 10K (6.2 miles) and didn’t set any records, but I did finish and got second in my old gomer age group. (Pictures below.) Then home to cook (yes, I cooked the basics of the dinner) and Chris and Steve…

Some Misc Stuff
I Got a Couple of Questions About Why… … I was cut off the marathon course at mile 11 instead of later on. Simple math is the answer. I had reached the 11 mile turn at 2 hours and 10 minutes. Now I had on my planned-out schedule that was about the latest I could hit that point and I was wrong by a few minutes. It was too late. Actually, I wanted to hit it under two hours. Here is the thinking… I did 11 miles, while fresh, in 2 hours and 10 minutes. That means if I was lucky, I was going to do the next 11 miles…

13 Plus Miles
A Half Marathon… That’s what I mostly ran tonight on the Strip in Las Vegas with about 35,000 other runners from all over the world. I had left it up in the air if I would try for the full marathon, even though I had signed up for the full. The full marathon leaves the half marathon course at 11 miles. The full marathon has a very tight time on it because they have to open back up the Strip and if a runner is falling behind, they divert them ahead and still give them credit for running a marathon. I was not in good enough shape to really run…

35,000 Close Friends Went Running
Kris and I Joined Them… That’s right, what better thing to do than run 5K with 35,000 of your closest friends on a Saturday night in Las Vegas in the dark on narrow streets. (This was the run I fell in last year and got so badly damaged.) And tomorrow evening is the Rock and Roll Marathon that shuts down the the entire Las Vegas Strip, from downtown to beyond the airport. Tomorrow no one in their right mind will get in a car in Las Vegas. Not only is the Strip completely closed from 2 pm until after 10pm for the run, but on the Strip at 7 pm…
