    Updating

Updated the Making a Living With Short Fiction Blog Above this I updated the post from 3 years and 6 years ago. That sort of scares me that many years have gone by here. (grin). ——- The Day Monday running errands, then met Kris at the mall because it was so cold and windy here, we decided to run (her) and mostly walk (me) in the parking garage. Yes, I know most of you are in massive heat, and if you go about ten miles inland, it’s hot in Oregon as well. But we live on the Oregon coast for a reason. Today I went out with a sweatshirt and…

    Three Years

Three Years That’s right, three years ago tomorrow I started this daily blog, missed a few days, then settled into a streak of not missing posting something here. I wrote numbers of non-fiction books here and am working on yet another with the third Sacred Cows book. And three years ago I announced Smith’s Monthly and that the first issue would be out in October three years ago. I should have the 36th issue out in late September if all goes well. Right on time. I had planned to just stop the daily blogs and do special posts blogs, but have now decided to just keep on going for a…

What Does It Take to Be a Full Time Writer?

What Does It Take To Be A Full Time Writer? I’ll talk about that question below. ——- The Day Meetings from 1:30 until around 5:30 at WMG offices. I also got my long-awaited three volumes of Smith’s Monthly paper editions into the office. (Delayed at the printer.) They will be going out to subscribers together in a day or so, as soon as we get them all packed up.  Wonderful fun to see all three issues together like that, and looks like the next three will show up together as well in about a month, then we will be back on a regular monthly basis. Went home for a short nap, then…

    Two New Online Workshops Announced

Two New Online Workshops Announced! Two of the workshops I asked about last week are going to start in August. We are taking sign-ups for both right now since the July workshops are starting in one week. Writing Mystery and Reader Expectations The two new workshops have also been added to the September and one of them to the October schedule which are listed under the Online Workshops tab above. I know it is hard to imagine, but July is almost here. All but one of the July workshops have only one or no one signed up, so if you want almost private lessons from me and Kris in July,…

    Fun Workshop Poll Results

Fun Workshop Poll Results Thank you, everyone, for chiming in on what might interest you on the three workshops Kris and I were talking about. Very clear that the Expectations (writing on the rails) workshop and the Mystery workshop were the two big winners. More on that below.. ——- The Day Got out of bed late and missed one meeting and from that point on the afternoon seemed to be behind. So I did some work in our new bookstore and then headed home to take a nap. Kris cooked dinner, I did dishes and did e-mail and then went to reading a book I’ve been looking forward to reading.…

    Some New Workshop Ideas

New Workshop Ideas After meetings this afternoon, Kris and I headed over to the valley to do some shopping, have dinner and see a movie. On the way back we got talking about ideas for new workshops. See topic of the night below on a few of them. ——- The Day WMG Publishing meeting at 2 p.m. and then around 4 p.m. Kris and I headed for the valley. We live on the Oregon Coast, so at times we go into the Wallamette Valley to just get away. So we did some shopping, had diner and saw a movie. Got home around 12 p.m. and I did a little e-mail,…

    Store and Workshop

Store and Workshop Another full day at WMG offices (part of which will soon be our new store). I worked on one of the new workshops as well as did a bunch of stuff in the store. Got the second temporary sign hung outside, got some final trim work done, did a lot of work on all the die cast cars. And then spent the evening sorting through and getting some non-sports cards ready. (They are art cards mostly. But we have a lot of Trek, Star Wars, X-Files and other cards. We have one area of the store that is nothing but non-sport cards. And dug out some old…

    Workshops and Store

Workshops and Store I spent all day on the store and on working on workshops, so it was a very fun day. Patreon Supporters and Smith’s Monthly Subscribers As planned, I got a recent issue of Smith’s Monthly out to subscribers and up on Patreon. The next issue should be out to subscribers and up on Patreon on Friday, and then with luck, the third issue in this run will be on Monday. Now it’s going to take me some writing to get caught up. ————— Topic of the Night: nothing tonight I’ve been sitting at the computer too long today, so no topic tonight. Need to give my eyes a…

Topic of the Night: A New Online Workshop: Teams in Fiction

Kris and I have decided, once again, to tackle a really, really important area of fiction, but one we believe most writers flat don’t understand or even realize exists. Teams in Fiction Basically, when Lester Dent (under a pen name) invented Doc Savage, he broke an old fiction tradition of one character and a sidekick. With Doc Savage, he created five team members that worked around Doc and by doing so set the template for all modern fiction. Think about your favorite shows. NCIS, the number one show on television, has Gibbs in the middle and his team around him. Captain Kirk and his team. Luke and his team in Star…

    Workshop Day

Workshop Day Still pretty tired from the schedule getting screwed up yesterday with jury duty, so spent the day doing workshop stuff. ——— The Day Nothing really much to talk about. Introduced our cleaning person to the new cat, then headed to the WMG offices to work on workshop stuff. Had lunch with Kris, then more workshop stuff. Home for dinner around 7 p.m. and then I watched the Blazer game with the new cat on my lap. Then I took a nap, watched more television, worked on more workshop stuff, and am now going to call it a night. Got stuff accomplished, just nothing exciting. (grin) ———- Workshops May…
