Negative Habits

Habits of Not Writing…

Or not publishing what you write. Over the years I have talked a lot in classes and here about how it really helps to form positive habits on writing. Start a streak, do a challenge, write at the same time each day, and so on. And with the publishing coming in, I have often suggested a publishing day each week set aside only for publishing. Form a habit.

But what I have noticed in myself and others lately is not writing, not publishing, is habit-forming as well.

Streaks, challenges, and so on to help form positive habits are powerful, but so are the habits of not writing. Once you set up a habit of just not going to your computer, that habit can stop you because it is so hard to fight.

Just an observation at the moment. I will be doing more on this here over time as I work to break a couple of bad habits for myself. Not an issue in doing it. Just the awareness of the power of a bad habit struck me this week.

Early Bird Sale Extended…

And a couple people had missed it, so I just extended it today for a few more days.

The goal is to help writers get set up to make it through the Time of Great Forgetting that is starting now and through the first of May.

And I extended it to not only the Advanced Craft and Collections classes starting May 6th, but everything. 50% off everything on Teachable.

Again, just for a few more days.

Code is

EarlyBirdApril

Just find the class you want on WMG Teachable, hit purchase, then put in the code and hit apply and you will get it for 50% off.

Yes, this includes the EVERYTHING LIFETIME SUBSCRIPTION

Again, this is just for a few days. Give yourself a focus to get through this coming time of distractions.

Still writing every day, finishing and sending out short stories to magazines. Indie publshing the short stories is currently on freeze due to financial stress, also I have critical voice issues about the process of self publishing like “where are you going to find fonts for the cover? You don’t know how to format an e-book. Starting a business too much right now” and so on….

Just one detail at a time and you can do it. Publishing seems difficult and overwhelming, but just one detail at a time.

And with short stories, why not send them to magazines first, collect a few hundred rejections and maybe a few sales before you even worry about publishing them?

“…collect a few hundred rejections and maybe a few sales before you even worry about publishing them?”

I’m doing the first half of your suggestion with about 140 rejections and my first sale. I should do the second half as well and stop worrying.
