Advice From A Fiction Editor
Might Work As A Title… I think I will call this series “Advice from a Fiction Editor.” I have about ten more stories to read that are from workshops as assignments, then I will change out hats and read as the Pulphouse Fiction Magazine editor. Pulphouse is not open for submissions and never will be, so what am I reading? Backers of the Pulphouse Kickstarter in July get monthly prompts and using the prompt can send me a story for consideration. I did this last year and I had a blast and I bought some stories. Great fun. And what is interesting is that the writers are actually (because they…

A Branding Summary,,,
Figuring Out What I Missed… When you write a series of nonfiction posts on something, with no outline or path you are intending to go, unlike fiction, it can get really jumbled. And then do the posts over almost ten months of crazy busy stuff, it gets stupidly disorganized. Yeah, I did that. So now my attempt to start figuring out what I have missed in these branding posts turns out to be tougher than I thought it might be. I started doing branding posts back in February with a post titled: Fiction Branding Part 1… https://deanwesleysmith.com/fiction-branding-part-1/ About different types of branding using the Bryant Street books as an example.…

Classic Plus Prepare Ahead Classes
This Time Writing For PULPHOUSE FICTION MAGAZINE!! Last spring, to get the writers ready for the Anthology workshop and to help them understand what the book editor’s at the anthology workshop wanted, we did a series of Prepare Ahead classes on the WMG Writer Store. Each class had a interview by the book editor, guidelines, and ten videos about how to write short stories for that specific sub-genre. Lots and lots of good information. And then the writers wrote for the anthology. I was reading for Pulphouse Fiction Magazine at the Anthology Workshop, but the book editors had first choice of a story written for them. I still bought 7…

The Time Travel Fun of Editing…
Sometimes Even I Get Confused… And I have been editing for 35 years in one way or another. Pulphouse Fiction Magazine #32 came out yesterday to subscribers in ebook. Paper and contributor paper copies will trail along as normal for anything paper. I wrote the introduction to that issue back in early June. Pulphouse is monthly now, which causes me to work out two or three months ahead. Two is minimum. So tonight I finished the introduction to the October issue that will come out right before Halloween. Here in the heat of August I have been writing about the fall weather and Trick-Or-Treating. And selecting a few stories in…

Interesting Perspective…
Writers Getting Mad At Me… Not really a surprise. I am totally used to it over the decades because people don’t like my outspoken nature especially when it grinds up against a dearly held myth of theirs. But at the moment they are angry because they feel they should be able to submit to Pulphouse Fiction Magazine without being a subscriber first. Not kidding, but outside of a Kickstarter promotion, not even subscribers can submit to the magazine. (grin) Right now, if you get a six issue subscription for $30 in the Kickstarter, you also get 2 different Fiction Rivers to read, plus four special Pulphouse anthologies, and backers get…
