The Assumption of One Book!
“Your Book!”
I get a ton of email every day with someone or some company wanting to (for a slight fee) print, promote, or help launch “MY BOOK.”
Which one?
This year alone I will be doing 53 brand new major books and rebranding and republishing another 22 to hit my 75 challenge.
I have published over my lifetime between 800 and a 1,000 major books. (Got to count those at some point for an exact number.)
So I have found it funny that the scammers are always willing (for a small fee) to promote my book.
Then finally it dawned on me (sank through my thick skull would be a better way of putting it) that most writers only have one book, or one book every year or so, and those writers would instantly know what “Your Book” meant.
I guess I have been around prolific writers far, far too long. For example, today Kris got in some paper copies of a brand new book. They are sitting downstairs on the kitchen counter as I write this and she hasn’t even gone and looked because she is busy writing a new book. So for today I suppose that book on the counter downstairs could be called “her book” but there will be two or three more coming soon, and then which book will it be?
But honestly, I find the assumption out there in the world that writers only have one book troubling.
I guess it bothers me on the level that I can’t imagine having that kind of pressure on any of my books. No wonder writers have trouble with doing a second or third book. “Their Book” becomes like a golden calf up on a marble stand.
A writer is a person who writes.
An author is a person who has written.
Having only one book to focus on takes away the writer part and makes the writer into an author. Wow, over the years have I known a lot of authors. I do not admire them. I admire writers.
Me, I’m a writer, so “My Book” is more than likely the one I am working on at the moment. And that would be A Menu of Memory and Nine Other Twisted Fantasy Stories.
