13 Years… Every Night… Without Missing

Not a Clue How I Did This…

But somehow, since August 1st, 2012, I did some sort of blog here on this web site every night, without missing a night, for 13 straight years.

4,745 Days.

During those years we started and built WMG Publishing with lots of ups and downs along the way. We moved suddenly to Las Vegas. I was in the hospital twice overnight, once for major surgery.

I went through more power failures than I care to remember, and the internet went out even more. I never once posted a blog from my phone and did have help from Kris on a bunch of occasions typing in what I wanted to say. Thanks, Kris, for all the reminders over the years.

When traveling, which I used to do, I had an iPad that I posted from.

Content of all those blogs? Sometimes non-fiction books were written one post at a time, a lot of promotion for the 53 Kickstarters I have done during that time. For a time when I was doing Smith’s Monthly, I often posted the covers I was doing. Might do that again as I ramp back up Smith’s Monthly.

Over the years the posts tend to average around 500 words a night, some more, some less. That’s over 2 million, three hundred thousand words. Yikes…

The reason I started this was because I wanted to focus back on my writing after spending a year cleaning up my friend’s estate. And I had no real novels since all my novels were WFH in traditional publishing.

So I started this blog, started writing a novel a month, and in October of that year I put out the first issue of Smith’s Monthly. When I ramp up, I really ramp up.

All those novels during that period of years and years were just published without promotion. And I wrote a lot of short stories as well. A lot!

So at times, many more nights than I care to remember, putting something here has been a giant pain. And some nights when I am working on something here, it has been great fun.

But so far the power of this streak remains and I will continue on. It is bound to end at some point.

So with luck, in 255 days, if I remember, I will celebrate the 5,000 days in a row blogging. That’s a long ways a way and a lot can happen. But compared to 4,745 days in a row, it doesn’t seem that long.

Thanks to those on my Patreon account for supporting this blog. And thanks to Kris for the reminders, the help, and for making sure when I was tired or sick, I got this done. Thank you!!

Thanks to all of you for following along.

One day at a time. Here we go.

Amazing work! Looking forward to you celebrating that milestone. It also shows that our daily writing adds up!

    Hi Dean,

Just wanted to offer you my congratulations! I’ve been subscribed via RSS to the blog for several years now and consistently look forward to these posts. There’s a lot of wisdom hidden within the 2.3 million words. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Congrats, Dean. We met a couple of times at conferences in the mid- to late-1990s where I was teaching poetry, of all things, and you guys were doing the Kris & Dean show and telling folks a creative way to find an agent. (That’s how long ago that was.)

Fortunately I got curious, looked up your blog and found it in February 2014, learned WITD and Heinlein’s Rules, and have never looked back.

Thanks for all you do and have done.

And I read each blog, and learned a lot about writing and publishing from them.
And your blog taught me how to advertise novels and magazines.
So thank you. I look forward to reading each new blog until you reach 5000.
