Introduction: Living at Pulp Speed Five

Or At Least Some of the Introduction… I might cycle back and add stuff to the introduction for the book. But for now, a day ahead of the challenge starting, I’m going to write some of this introduction. It is below. So many of you will have heard some of this on the ramp-up to this challenge. But I have to put it all in the introduction to the book, so hang on. Also, still two spots left in the follow along to the challenge, where I send you a letter every night and you get to read whatever I manage to write way ahead of it coming out, in…

    Living At Pulp Speed Five

Here I Go Again… A challenge to myself and a way for some of you to follow closely along and learn. That’s right, a crazy idea on both sides. See more below on this. Let me back into explaining this. Pulp Speed comes from Star Trek War Speed and is a way to sort of shorthand the speed that old pulp writers used to write at regularly for years. Pulp Speed One is 1 million words per year or about 83,000 words per month. So if you write 83,000 words in a month, you wrote at Pulp Speed that month. Pulp Speed Two is 1.2 million words in a year…

    Pulp Speed Time Again

Got Some Questions So Wanted This Up Front… (I wrote this post about four-and-a-half years ago, then brought it forward over a year later. Then again for 2017 start. Now it is the middle of 2018. Time for this one again just to remind some or at least let you know what some people talk about when they say “Pulp Speed.” I have updated it this for today, July 2018.) ——– Not at all sure why this idea of writing at Pulp Speed sort of hits me right. I think because it flies in the face of all the myths. A writer has to have all myths under control to even…

Once More… For the New Year… Pulp Speed

Pulp Speed… Once More (I wrote this post about three years ago, then brought it forward over a year ago. But with these other posts, this one might help for 2017 more than most. Or at least let you know what some people talk about when they say “Pulp Speed.” I have updated it for this coming year.) Not at all sure why this idea of writing at Pulp Speed sort of hits me right. I think because it flies in the face of all the myths. A writer has to have all myths under control to even attempt this. So this post might just make you angry because it hits…

    Pulp Speed Writers

Pulp Writers’ Abilities… (I first wrote this blog back in May of 2016 and figured it might be a good one to put here at the end of the year.) I got a great question today about some of the basics the really prolific pulp writers did to be so productive. And how to go about finding out about a lot of their styles. How I have learned about so many of the older pulp writers is by reading book about them in their own words, reading books about the era, and just finding anything I could to read about the pulp writers of the 1920s to 1950s. A great…

    Pulp Speed Post Brought Back

Pulp Speed (I wrote this post about a year ago but wanted to bring it forward because people ask me about it. Here it is again) I’ve mentioned this concept a number of times on my nightly blog and in the Topic of the Night little sections. But since Pulp Speed was almost impossible in the new traditional world, it belongs as a post in this series. Not at all sure why this idea sort of hits me right. I think because it flies in the face of all the myths. A writer has to have all myths under control to even attempt this. So this post might just make you…

The New World of Writing: Pulp Speed

Pulp Speed I’ve mentioned this concept a number of times on my nightly blog and in the Topic of the Night little sections. But since Pulp Speed was almost impossible in the new traditional world, it belongs as a post in this series. Not at all sure why this idea sort of hits me right. I think because it flies in the face of all the myths. A writer has to have all myths under control to even attempt this. So this post might just make you angry because it hits at belief systems I’m afraid. The second reason I can’t shake this idea is because for all of my life…

    Pulphouse Layout Took Longer

Issue Zero… I was still up at the WMG offices working on Issue Zero of Pulphouse after one a.m. for the second night in a row. Just too much strain on my eyes to not give them some rest after that. So no writing on a short story tonight. I started to, but after forty minutes I had a great novel start and I just tossed in the towel for the night. ANTHOLOGY WORKSHOP Folks, first anthology assignment is now out through the e-mail group. Happy writing.   My short story challenge so far since the 10th of the month. So far, here is the November Short Story Challenge. (10th…

Night Off Story. Working On Pulphouse

Worked On Pulphouse Issue Zero… I was still up at the WMG offices working on Issue Zero of Pulphouse after one a.m. Came home then, watched a little television, and then wrote letters to everyone who backed the Pulphouse Kickstarter with a workshop or lecture. It’s a little after 6 a.m. right now and I just finished that. Issue Zero should be out by December 1st. It’s looking great. And some amazing stories in it. ANTHOLOGY WORKSHOP Folks, if you think you are attending the anthology workshop in late February and are not signed up through me and paid, or are not on the group list, you are almost too…

    Catching Up And Pulphouse Fun

Totally Normal After a Long Workshop… The day was full of a ton of different things, from unloading the van full of stuff from the workshop to checking in with all three stores to working on workshops. All regular stuff after a long week of a major coast workshop. But also tonight, after being caught up, I got to play with putting Pulphouse Fiction Magazine Issue Zero together. Wonderful fun. All of the stories in Issue Zero will be only reprints, so I am have had the pleasure of reading great stories I either haven’t read before, or ones I remember fondly from twenty-some years before. And the writers with…
