Great Fun At Superstars

Fun Panels and Smart Writers…

I had some really fun panels today on topics ranging from the future of electronic books to newsletters. On Saturday I’m going to do a presentation on corporations for writers, then be on panels on agents (I have promised to be nice) and finding a balance. Then off for home.

Tonight was the fun thing for me among many fun things. Something they call the VIP dinner, sort of like what we do at lunches on our big workshops. Six writers set with me for dinner and four hours later we were still talking about writing and all sorts of stuff. Great fun.

So a fun day. One more and then headed home.

Once again today I got to meet a lot of writers who have taken some workshops online. And a number who wanted to but hadn’t yet. Turned out from the ones who had taken classes, the Depth workshop and the Teams Workshop were their favorites, along with two people who have taken the new Novel Structure workshop. Only about seven people have taken that workshop and I ran into three of them here who liked it a lot.

As I said last night, here at Superstars I have gotten a number of questions about wanting to sign up all at once for a bunch of things, so since we had this worked out, I got some good comments about posting the bundles of worshops.

So this has been a fun trip. My sleep is all screwed up, but that’s all right. Looking forward to the fun stuff and conversations on Saturday.

Then not looking forward to the plane flight home. But with luck, I will live.

Dean, the severe turbulence you had flying to Colorado is very uncommon. The chances you will experience it again going home are remote at best.
So enjoy beating up on the New York agents and editors! (Grin)

Being nice while talking about agents. Really?

I’m guessing you’ll be telling them the things to mitigate possible damage agents can do (perhaps phrased more nicely), such as:
hiring your own IP lawyer to check the contracts
splitting the payments from the publisher so you get your 80% immediately rather than waiting for agent to forward them
termination clauses in agency contracts if your agent leaves/dies
continuing to seek your own foreign rights deals/audio deals/etc.
find out exactly where your agent has sent your book and send it everywhere else after they give up
    etc.

Which, of course, leads to … if you’re doing all that, consider going without an agent and see what happens.

    See? I’ve been paying attention.

They made me the moderator, so I got off the hook a bunch. So I made a few pointed points, but no big arguments which was good. (Grin)

Superstars is the best event that I have attended for learning the business side of writing. The speakers (Instructors) are long term, highly productive pros who have enjoyed a successful, long-term careers. In my opinion, the quality of the presentations and the depth of knowledge is far better than conferences such as RWA, Buchercon, worldcon, etc. Well worth the cost and time The alue received is well worth the cost.
