Distractions…
The Good, the Bad, the Ugly…
Over the last two years, Kris and I have had to deal with some really ugly distractions while fighting to keep our business going. The distractions and uglyness seemed to never end. We both became afraid to even look at our email at times, but we worked our way through it, staying focused as best we could.
Ugly distractions in all their sizes and shapes, from the loss of a close friend or family member to injury to bad job events basically just derail you and you have to take a deep breath and know there is another side and the writing and publishing will come back. Difficult perspective, but the only way.
Bad distractions are anything from having to do a new task to dealing with family and jobs and so on. Bad distractions you can often write and publish right through, although not as much as you might want.
Good distractions are anything from vacations to fun family events to friends to great news on business or something else. You know, the time of great forgetting. All good stuff.
Kris and I right now are dealing with the good distractions of having a lot of the ugly stuff from the last few years resolve. I did not realize until just recently how great news can really derail your writing, your publishing schedule, and just take your mind off into new directions.
But just like the time of great forgetting, wow is it fun. The key is to figure out how to enjoy it all and keep some writing going. Kris is making it work with her motivation challenge. And it is helping a bunch of others.
No matter the distraction, good or bad, if you keep your focus on the long term writing and publishing and just keep on going, it always just levels out.
