Sleep… The Final Frontier…

Seems That Sleep Stuff Is Still Rare…

Back at the first of August I altered my sleep schedule to make it to the anthology workshop by 9 am.

And then because of a writing project I may do this fall, I decided I needed to keep that schedule. But I slipped and as like I am doing tonight, I stayed up like the old schedule until 5 am.

And the brain, that is trying to make the switch, wakes me up at 8 am. Wide awake ready to go.

It is like I am switching four time zones every day. Naps are not making up for the problem, so at some point I just have to slide this work schedule back to being done at midnight. Because I can tell you right now, at 4:30 in the morning, this is no longer working. (grin)

And I really want to do that writing project and I really want to go to some of the charity runs this fall that start at 8 am. So going to make the switch. Might kill me, but going to make it.

Night…

Ouch! Once I trained myself to wake early, I am up at sunrise. The problem is getting to bed by 11. I have read some advice that helped. This is for all my fellow night owls:

    – witness the sunrise and sunset with your own eyes, and not through a window (the low sun angle signals the brain what time it is.)
    – avoid screens at least an hour before getting to bed
    – use warmer lights and use blue blocker on screens ( can’t design covers with it on, I found.)
    – a warm shower will switch on the body’s cooling system (out thermostat lives in the upper back and we radiate mosy heat through hands, feet, and face.?) The body cooling at night triggers sleep.
    – caffeine and alcohol willchange your sleep architecture, YMMV. Figure out your caffeine cut-off time.
    – a cold shower may feel great during a heat wave, but it may trigger enough dopamine release to inhibit sleep. Again YMMV.
    – a bedtime routine of gentle stretches can be a good sleep trigger (it works for me.)

Laughed out loud at sleep being your topic today. Decided to fix a factual error in my current WiP right before bed last night and the next thing I knew it was 5:30 AM and I had 1/3 of a longish short story finished. Now I’m at the day job feeling both elated and absolutely terrible!

    Feeling this.
No desire to be a morning lark, but I’m going to 9am exercise classes trying to get in shape. And i have kids that think I’m supposed to be up. Sigh.

Hey does anyone know what has happened to Passive Guy? His wonderful blog, The Passive Voice is gone. URL still works, but page is totally white. I was enjoying reading back old posts…
