Kickstarter Friday

A Number of Fiction Kickstarters Every Friday…

I only list the campaigns I like and that I think would be worth studying for writers thinking of doing a campaign. Send me your live campaign if you want me to consider listing it here. If you want me to look at your campaign before you launch, I will be glad to. Just send the preview to me.

And for those wondering where I get off judging Kickstarter Campaigns by fiction writers, I have now done 55 of them, every one funded and made money. My first campaign was in the very early days of Kickstarter. But if yoyu are going to study campaigns that I have done, study the last year or so. I am continuing to learn.

So now to some campaigns this week.

A Christmas Wedding Book 2: A Live-Writing Project by Terry F. Torrey

This might be the most innovative way I have seen Kickstarter used. Professional writer Terry F. Torry and his 14 year old daughter are writing a book together in the 30 days of the campaign and reporting on their progress each day. This did the same thing last year and funded just fine.

Really fun to follow and really, really a nifty and gutsy way to use Kickstarter. Back this one and follow along. I have backed it already.

Heart of the Wayshower Saga | Special Edition Hardback Books by Michael Dawn Books

This is a reissue of two young adult sf novels in special edition hardback books. The books are good looking and the campaign is off to a good start. One major complaint that I often have about folks who do these reissue special editions is that there is no place for us new readers to the series to get in. So there should be paper, and regular hardbacks of both books, single and together, to allow new readers in without spending a fortune and then having to read a special edition beautiful book.

(Folks, you do realize there are a lot of readers who do NOT read ebooks, only paper or hardback. Live with it, cater to us, or lose readers.) Michael D. Brooks, I would back this if you let me in.

This one is worth studying and backing if you like young adult sf.

Wings to a New World by Dawn Blair

This is a science fantasy novel written by Dawn Blair. This campaign has nice art and good rewards and some fun details. It just launched today and is off to a good start. If you like science fiction combined with fantasy and a little romance, this is one you should back.

And I love the cover of the book. Very professional. This one hits it solidly and I have backed it.

Rig For Space – A Collection of Military SciFi Stories by Michael Kingswood

This is a collection of military science fiction stories, written by Michael Kingswood who spent a few decades in the Navy on submarines. He is writing novels in the world of these stories as well and you can get that as well. Read his story.

This campaign is really solid, hitting all the marks for those who like military science fiction. Clean and simple and to the point. Compare this one to a good romance campaign that has a different focus and goal. Each every different. So Michael hit this one perfectly for military science fiction. I have backed it.

Fixed, Tony. And caution, I have deleted the Dark Forces one because of use of AI art. I would never support anyone who steals other people’s work. So if ypu backed that one, I would cancel your pledge.

  • Michael T. Anderson

Dean, I know you’ve discouraged the use of AI art by authors in the past. The campaign for “Some Dark Force” clearly uses AI art as part of its marketing. The character portraits especially are recognizably AI art. Does that mean that you have changed your mind and now think it’s fine for authors to use AI in their publishing?

I don’t know how I feel about AI art myself. I think it’s stealing from digital painters and other artists, and I know you’ve said that writers who use it are opening themselves up to future lawsuits.

    Thanks, Mike

Well, shoot, I missed that and that project has now been deleted. Anyone who uses AI in writing and in art are just thieeves who do not understgand how that was trained and are lazy beyond years. Can’t believe I missed that and can’t believe Kickstarter let that go through. Sigh, thank you, Michael.
