HISTORY BROUGHT FORWARD…
Back in the Day…
And I do mean “back in the day” when Kris and I were going to a lot of science fiction conventions (1990-1998 or so), we got asked to do a live talk on publishing.
Sounded fine, even though were were two new writers, we decided to talk about what we knew about the publishing business (which was a ton because I was the publisher of Pulphouse Publishing and she was not only the senior editor, but also the editor of the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction.)
We were also selling novels like crazy and were in and out of of New York publishing offices all the time.
Kris and I tried to make the convention talks fun and we focused on what we wished we would have known so much sooner.
People started calling our routine The Kris and Dean Show and conventions started giving us two or three hours to packed rooms of writers. And we got lots of requests to talk about craft as well, so we used the movie Die Hard, doing an evening session and showing it on a big screen and stopping and starting it a hundred times to talk craft in what was happening in the story.
Super fun. We stopped doing them when we stopped traveling so much.
But I am one to talk about always going forward. But over the decades, people kept asking us when we would bring those back.
Seems today is the answer.
The Kris and Dean Show: Prepping for 2025 just started tonight on WMGWriterStore.com (Yes, you can still get in) and on WMG Teachable we just launched The Kris and Dean Show Does Die Hard. But there is a catch to the second one. We have to have enough signed up to make it worth the 5 hours to me and Kris to record it. If we get enough, the entire 3-4 hours of videos will be loaded on the 12th.
Check both out below, including an outtake from the one that launched today.
Focus forward I always say and I practice it. But it seems for the moment, the slice of the past is a forward future. And actually, could be a lot of fun considering how much Kris and I have learned in the past thirty years.
The Kris and Dean Show Does Die Hard
For over three hours, Kris and Dean will go scene-by-scene through Die Hard: The Christmas Movie.
Die Hard is a fantastic way to learn story. Detail by detail on how to build a story, from openings to try/fails to climax and validation.
Also the movie is great for learning pacing. And fantastic for information flow.
And for building great characters, both main characters and secondary characters.
Extreme depth, great foreshadowing, action sequences, cliffhangers, and so much more.
Kris and Dean will go over the movie, stopping and starting it and talking about each area of the movie as they go.
Fantastic Amounts of Learning for Only $50 on WMG Teachable.
How this will work. If enough people sign up and pay to make it worth our time, Kris and I will spend an afternoon recording, going over the movie point-by-point.
All three-plus hours of videos will be posted at once on Thursday, December 12th.(Die Hard will not be on the videos.) You will have to pull up Die Hard on your computer or television, get ready to stop and start it dozens and dozens of times, and follow along with the learning.
So you can take your time going through it, maybe many times. Even watch it next year if no time in December.
Price is $50 for hours and hours of learning from Kris and Dean. But there is a catch.. Ifwe do not have enough signed up quickly, we will not do this one and refund the money to those who did sign up. The reason is that to record those three plus hours, it will take us at least five hours and we have writing to do.
So jump in quickly on WMG Teachable.
Lifetime Everything Subscribers, email has already been sent through the Everything Subscription with a code.
Don’t delay signing onto this one. Get us to do these hours of recording and teach Die Hard just as we used to do when we were first doing the Kris and Dean Shows at conventions.
Only this time, instead of only seeing it once, you have it on your computer to go over when you need to.
Questions, write me.
Fun Outtake…
Kris and I recorded the first session of THE KRIS AND DEAN SHOW: Prepping for 2025 which unlike what I talked about above is a full eight week workshop on WMGWriterStore. com
That class just started tonight. Here is an outtake of us getting started that Steph recorded for fun. It is blessedly short.

Oh I wanna sign up for Die Hard!
Question: if it ends up not happening, will you just offer a refund? I’m asking because while I don’t have the Everything subscription, I do have… A LOT of classes (including one of the Lifetime subscriptions). So I’m not sure what else I would need on WMG at this point. I want to sign up right now but I’m hesitant if it ends up being for a credit (if there’s not enough interest to actually do it).

It is happening. No issue at this point.

The Kris & Dean Show was what introduced me to Kris and Dean and wow, did it kickstart my writing career. I even dragged my husband to their movie night, although I can’t remember if they did Die Hard or Back to the Future. (I’m talking 24 years or so ago.) Hubby had a blast listening to them, and I learned a heck of a lot about storytelling.
If you’re even at all thinking about doing this, I’m going to give you an enthusiastic two thumbs-up recommendation.

Thanks, Annie. Now that you mention it, we did do Back to the Future a few times as well. Forgot about that.
