Had To Happen

I Committed Novel…

I am still counting it as a short story, and will put it in the final book for this challenge if I make it to the end. But in my mind I have no doubt this does not wrap as a short story.

First off, it is paced wrong. Paced like a novel and I didn’t pay any attention until I got about 2,000 words in and went “Oh, oh…”

Second, what my devious creative voice was setting up was a great romance in my Thunder Mountain series. So I also didn’t realize I had jumped viewpoint on a break until about 2,000 words in.

“Oh, oh…”

Tough to hold a story short with a romance team structure and two viewpoints.

Creative voice wins the day on this one. I am counting it, but I doubt it will fly as a short story at all.

The Day

Got to the office ahead of the start of the workshop, then after the workshop, Allyson, Gwyneth, and Josh all left early to let me record workshops and I did that until after the evening fantasy workshop started.

Got home around 11 p.m. and got myself some dinner and fast-forwarded through the Voice, which the playoff format sucked. It will be better next week I am sure with the top twelve.

Then did email and got to my writing computer at 12:30 a.m.

The Story

Sat down in my writing chair with the clear intent to write a short story. For some reason the name Sage Green stuck in my head and I figured that was a cool name, so I left the title off for a change and started typing from Sage Green’s viewpoint.

Turned out she was a woman and a researcher who had found something nifty in a photo in the Idaho Wilderness. Oh, oh, a Thunder Mountain story. Those often go long. But I had time, so I kept on going.

I took a quick break at 1:30 with just over 1,200 words done. Story going along just peachy.

Then wrote until 2:30 and 2,500 words before I stopped at a break point. I am sure it is not a short story, but if it was, the point I stopped would be right. So I’m counting it for this challenge and it will be in the book, if nothing else than for an example of how the creative voice can just mess with you. (grin)

I went back and called it “Green Canyon.” Not sure why.

But damn, it’s going to be a fun novel to write.

That’s what I love about writing. “Why did you call it that?” “That’s what it told me it’s name was.”
