Issue of Smith’s Monthly Going Out
ACTUALLY THREE ISSUES OVER THE NEXT WEEK…
Yup, slowly getting back on track. Got a ways to go yet, but getting closer. I would like to be back on track by issue #50. (And yes, when I think about filling my own magazine with 50 novels and over two hundred short stories and other stuff for over four years, I sort of shake my head as well.)
But we shall see. I have some writing to do that’s for sure. (grin) But at the moment, subscribers and Patreon supporters will be getting three issues over the next week or so.
Today was a fun day up at the office because of the Mystery workshop and then the few people who stopped by for the writer’s lunch. I ended up working up there on covers for Pulphouse Magazine, which I will talk about later in the week.
And today I have been answering questions about the challenges.
The basic thing I am saying is that these are supportive challenges. If you are interested, here is how you think about it….
On the novels, would you actually get three novels done by January 15th without knowing I was there to report into every week? If the honest answer is yes, you don’t need the challenge unless you are doing it for another reason, which a couple writers are.
Same with the short story challenge. If you honestly think you will get 30 short stories finished by December 1st, you don’t need the challenge. But if you need the push, the consistency of knowing you have to turn in a story regularly to me, and that will help your production, then go for the challenge.
And as I have said before, there will be off-ramps and I will be checking in with everyone in the challenge if stuff happens or family happens. The challenges are designed to be positive and supportive and get you a couple online workshops for early next year.

I’ve been surprised there hasn’t been more interest in this young adult bundle. It has some amazing books and writers in it. The book I have in this new bundle is a pure western young adult called The Life and Times of Buffalo Jimmy. I hope this winter to write more Buffalo Jimmy novels for Smith’s Monthly.
But right now, if you are fan of young adult, or know of someone who would love this, grab it for them.
Challenges
Only four people have signed up for the short story challenge so far. I expanded it and the novel challenge to eight writers, so still room in both.
If interested in signing up, just write me. They are going to be great fun. Here are the details once again.
SHORT STORY Challenge:
— Write thirty short stories in 60 days. You can take the full time or you can write them in a month. Up to you.
— I will charge $600 to be your first reader. If you try the challenge, you get two online workshops of your choice, a $600 value. (In essence, I will read for free if you do the challenge.)
— If you feel the challenge is not working for you, I will offer you an off-ramp at various points and you can take it and get the two online workshops. So you can try this risk free.
NOVEL Challenge:
— Write three novels between October 1st and January 15th. You can take the full time or you can write them quicker. Up to you.
— I will charge $600 to be your first reader. If you give this a try, you get two online workshops of your choice, a $600 value. (In essence, I will read for free if you do the challenge.)
— Novels can be any length over 30,000 words and at least half of the first one must be written during the time of the challenge.
— If you feel the challenge is not working for you, I will offer you an off-ramp and you can take it and get the two online workshops. I also will give you two online workshops if a life event comes up and you can’t finish.

I don’t have the cash right now, or I would be tempted. So, so, tempted. I played along with the last short story challenge, and got more stories in a month than I usually do in a year. (Okay, not 30 in a month, but 13 and 5 partials, which is really, really good for me in a month when I was also ill.) The thing about being sick? It means I don’t have the discretionary income that would let me play along properly right now.
I think I’ll try the same thing this go round, playing along on the sidelines, but with the novels this time. I have a novel about an amateur detective who happens to be an undercover Sasquatch to finish (long story), along with some other novel ideas that have been chewing at the back of my brain and need to get out before I go insane. Having three or four more manuscripts ready to go for the beginning of 2018 would be a huge boost to next year’s plans.
So. Oversized Gumshoe #1 needs to be done before the end of the month so I can start clean on October 1st. (It’s more that half-done already, and I’m pretty sure I know who kidnapped the water-dragon. It’s just a matter of dealing with the assassin, the forest fire, and the dragon’s pissed-off fire-breathing wife at this point. How hard could it be?)
