Explaining the Class

LICENSING: HOW TO CREATE A BRAND

The class is starting tomorrow. (Tuesday) It is a nine week class leading up to the Licensing Expo.  It is on Teachable.

So let me set a scene for you…

You are at (name any place as a setting that you might run into someone with a connection to a license).  For now just think major convention or the Licensing Expo, but it can happen anywhere and has to both me and Kris.

A person who can license IP who is interested in finding new IP to license comes to learn you own IP. Here is how the conversation goes…

Person: “So, what’s your brand?”

You:  “Uhhh, well, I have this novel that…”

Person: Smiling… “No, what is your brand, your IP?”

You: “Well, my novel is a fantasy novel that…”

Person’s eyes glaze over, they smile, nod, and change the subject.

You have just shown a person who works in licensing IP that you have no idea and have no firm brand that they can license. No telling what future just flashed past you at that moment.

(End very sad scene…)

This class is intended to give you the information that you can at least build a brand and describe it and license it.

Also, this class will help you start to understand the potential in a brand you build and own from your writing. For a very simple example, our Shopify stores sell merchandise with our brand images on it for the most part. That part is in the process of building out.

We use that merch to give fans what they think is cool. (I personally think the large pillow with the Pulphouse mascot Thumper on it is way cool.) But much of it will be used as samples as we move forward with a few of our brands.

So I am doing this class mostly for me, to really cement home the steps in the early process of building a brand. At WMG we have built purposeful brands, brands that just grew into a brand naturally, and accidental brands. All our valid.

To name just a few of WMG Brands..

My brands…

  • Developed…  Bryant Street and Marble Grant.
  • In Development… Cold Poker Gang and Poker Boy
  • (The rest of my series and books are not even started into development.)

Kris brands…

  • Developed…  Fey and Smokey Dalton and Diving. (Smokey and Diving are in options)
  • In Development… Grayson and Retrieval Artist and Epic Fantasy
  • (The rest of Kris’s series and books are not even started into development.)

WMG brands…

  • Developed…  Pulphouse and Holiday Spectacular.
  • In Development… (To be announced)

I am sure I missed a few. See why I am doing this class for myself? I hope a number of writers who want to see this possible future jump on board for the nine-week-ride. The class is called…
