Distractions Suck Time From The World…
And Even If They Are Good Distractions…
Today we had a guy come in to service our HVAC systems to get ready for the coming long, hot summer. A distraction, sure, but not a bad one. But sucked a few hours of my time.
During the time of the service guy, we got some emails that were all great news. Basically more climbing out of the stupidity and ugliness of the last few years, plus a great offer for a possible license. A very, very, very thin slice of a magic pie. (If you have not read the Magic Bakery book, you won’t understand that, but to those who backed the Kickstarter, that book will be in your hands early next week.)
So after the service guy wrapped up, we headed off to an early dinner out since neither of us had had lunch, and sort of celebrated and talked about the good news.
And I ate too much, which then required a long nap, and to wake up, I started playing around with some covers and by the time I actually got to my office through all the fun, it was after midnight. So what did I do? Spend another hour playing with covers. More learning fine details on inDesign, actually. Great fun. Distracting but great fun.
So by around 2 am I went to my writing computer and ended up going down a rabbit hole of finding more short stories that I did not have on my spread sheet. Another good distraction.
Then to the writing and my creative voice told me that an 1,800 word short story I had found, reworked, repaced, would work perfectly as a character introduction to one of the two characters in this new book I have started, but by that point my brain was saying “too much” for tonight.
So here I am writing about distractions.
Not a lot done on what I had hoped to get done today, but still a great day.
