What fun. Just got copies of an anthology I wrote a story for a few years back. The anthology is If I Were An Evil Overlord and it is edited by Martin H. Greenberg and Russell Davis and publised by Daw. My story is very weird, as you might expect. The title is "The Life and Death of Fortune Cookie Tyrant." Kris also has a story in the book, along with Nina Kiriki Hoffman, David Bischoff, and Esther Friesner, among others. 14 stories in total. Worth the money. I'll have some covers of some short young adult books I wrote up here in a few weeks, plus the story behind those. Cheers
I have three new stories out in anthologies. In this book, my story is The Keeper of the Morals. Book is on the stands right now, so don't miss a copy. It also has a story by Kristine Kathryn Rusch, plus another story by that imaginary person that sometimes shows up in our house named Kristine Grayson.
I also have, just out in December, a story in this wonderful book of stories about things we thought we might have by this time in the future. I won't say what my story is about, since you might want to read it. It's called Cold Comfort and let me say this about the story. Don't I wish. Kris, my wife, also has a wonderful story in this one.
You can't read the story in this anthology just yet, since it won't be out until May. The title of my story in this one is "Havin' Dinner on a Flyin' Saucer. The idea of this book was stories from the front lines, from the soldier's point of view. Well, if the aliens are invading... and thus my story.
Okay, at some point, I hope, three pictures of books that I have stories in will appear on this home page. All three of these books are Daw Anthologies. One came out in November, one in December, and I just got the cover for the one coming out in May. I'm proud of all three stories and the books are all great, with some great authors in them. I have been in at least thirty of these things over the years and I like every one of them. Nothing beats having a story in a book. Now, I can hear a question out there that I used to ask a great deal when I was starting out: How do you get into these books all the time? Aren't they all invite anthologies? Two questions I guess, sort of tied together. Yes, they are invite anthologies, so I get invited all the time. So does Kris and a number of others who can write a quality short story to an exact topic and on a certain deadline. But how does a newer professional break into this invite list? Actually, very simply. Come to a workshop in Lincoln City, Oregon that lasts from Feb. 28 through March 2nd, 2008. That's right, all these anthologies are put together by Tekno Books, and Denise Little (editor of Front Lines) is the executive editor of Tekno Books, which also does about six million other projects (I have written at least two novels for them). For four days starting in late February, Denise Little and I will teach an anthology workshop to about 30 professional writers who are looking to get into these books regularly. We have done this workshop three times in the past and both the editors of the other two books I am in (Loren L. Coleman and Rebecca Lickiss) were students of Denise in these workshops and went on to not only write stories for them, but edit some. The last time we did this workshop, Denise brought what we call a "live" anthology and had the writers write for it. And during the discussion about the stories, she just flat out bought some of them. She might do that again this time if she has a sold anthology she is looking to fill, and she very well might. But if nothing else, you get to meet Denise Little and get your work in front of her to see for future anthologies. So, who can come to these? Anyone who has sold a professional short story or more to some market. Or novels to professional publishers. If you are interested, I have at this moment in time, three days before Christmas, exactly six spots still open. Write me if you are interested at dean@deanwesleysmith.com with the header Denise Little Workshop. Give me a short bio on your publishing history and your interest and so on and we'll go from there. And feel free to pass the word. Now you can't ever wonder how people get into these anthologies. It is quality work and who you have met to get invitations. One more point. Four days with thirty other professional fiction writers is just a blast. Write me if you are interested and I will give you the details. And, oh, yeah, have a great holiday season. Cheers In the blog section, I just put the schedule for the graduate fiction writing workshops we are doing here on the Oregon Coast in 2008. We haven't done workshops for almost three years now, and it's kind of exciting bringing them back for a year. I'm spending less and less time at my little store (luckily I have a great store manager and employees) and more and more time back writing again, which I knew would happen eventually. See pictures of the store over in the blog, although I need to update those because we have fixed the place up even more since those pictures. I got a quick assignment in December to write a novel and got it done and turned in on time. And that got the old writing engine going again, so this next year should be a good one. I'll detail out some of the writing and ups and downs as time goes along. Even with taking a detour and starting the store, I had a pretty good year writing. Not a great one, but a pretty good one. I sold a bunch of short fiction, wrote a bunch of young adult novels under contract, and one adult novel. A slow year in writing for me, but considering that I stopped writing in May to do the store and didn't get back to writing until late this fall, it wasn't bad. Anyhow, workshops are set and up and running and I'm excited about all the learning and time spent with great writers this year. And I will be in Florida teaching at a writer's conference January 25th and 26th. And I plan to go to the World Science Fiction Convention in Denver in August, so I'm even going back out again after years of staying away from that sort of thing. 2008 is going to be a fun and exciting year. And a good writing one as well. Looking forward, as always. Happy New Year. Cheers The year has started off fairly well on both the writing and the workshops. I'll give an update over in the blog section on both. One thing that is in the works is an update on this web site, a new way of doing things that will allow me to both be here more and post more, just about every day, and also allow feedback and discussion again. Not like the old forum, but yet some give-and-take on writing topics. Stay tuned for that. The software being used by me on this site is just too hard for my small brain to deal with easily, so I don't post often. In the new format I'll also be able to lay out and describe a bunch of the 90 plus novels I have written over the years. That would be nice to be able to do as well. Kris and I spent a wonderful week in Cocoa Beach, Florida, not only touring the Kennedy Space Center and the cape, but also teaching for a few days at Space Coast Writers Conference. It's a wonderful small writer's conference and they treated us like gold. We had a blast. I got to talk some with Stuart Woods and a number of other wonderful writers and agents and editors who were there teaching as well. Great fun. I'll let you all know if we are lucky enough to be invited back at some point. Oh, yeah, and the weather there was wonderful. It was really hard to come back to this awful weather here on the Oregon Coast. What a contrast. Anyhow, stay tuned for changes coming to this web site. And check over in the blog for an update on my writing and the professional level workshops we are doing here on the coast again this year. Cheers I'm in the process of rebuilding this site, so if you got this because you have it marked, simply take off the /mt on the header and go directly to www.DeanWesleySmith.com. That's where the new construction is going on. I will take some time, but I should have newer stuff every day or so, and then will update the site every day after that with one thing or another. There will be a writing section, a Star Trek books section, my other books, and a bunch more, even a few places where you all can jump into the mix again. So head over there and watch the new construction and the new content being added over the next few weeks to a month or so. Cheers If you have reached this site, please just remove the "mt" from the address and just leave www.deanwesleysmith.com and then hit return to go to the new site. It is still under construction, but still nicer than this place. At some point we will put a forwarding from this site automatically. Thanks! Cheers Copyright ©2004-2007 Dean Wesley Smith.
